How to slackline with kids

Walking a slackline is a gentle and fun way to improve children’s motor skills, strengthen their postural muscles and simply get them outside into the fresh air. We’ve put together a few tips on how to start slacklining with kids.

  1. Choose a suitable slackline kit. A short kit with wider webbing is enough to start with – for example the EQB Step 12m kit and the Treepad tree bark protection.
  2. Choose a good spot to rig the line. A garden or a park with short grass and no stones, pine cones or twigs is ideal.
  3. Rig the line really low above the ground – at knee height – and only a few metres long.
  4. Tension the line really well – kids will find it easier to stand on when it’s tight. You can also weigh the line down by sitting on one end of it.
  5. Go barefoot – kids will have a better feel for the line.
  6. At the beginning, help the kids by holding them. Rigging a helper line above the slackline itself can help too.
  7. Be creative! Besides walking the line, kids can hop on it, walk sideways, turn around, walk against the clock, balance on one leg or the other, walk towards each other, walk one behind the other holding hands, and so on. Don’t force kids into anything. If they get bored of walking, try switching to another activity for a while.
  8. Enjoy it!
